Today, you are given a quiz on the spot, without warning. It has only one multiple choice question on it. It is:

Answer the question before proceeding to test your Bible knowledge. The answer is below.

Did you get it right? The answer is “obey the gospel”! For many people, this would be a surprising revelation. However, no matter how many times you search for the first three options, you cannot find them in the Bible. In most translations, however, you can find the phrase, “obey the gospel,” at least two times: once in 2 Thessalonians 1 and once in 1 Peter 4.

For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power. 2 Thessalonians 1:6-9.

For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 1 Peter 4:17.

What does it mean to obey the gospel? When Jesus told the disciples to preach the gospel, notice what He told them.

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” Mark 16:15-16.

Jesus said to obey the gospel is the believe and be baptized. According to Christ, when a person obeys the gospel this way, he or she will be saved. In 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, the apostle Paul says that the gospel contains the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. To obey this gospel, someone must die, be buried, and be resurrection.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Romans 6:1-7.

Many famous religious preachers are telling you to invite Jesus into your heart, by receiving and accepting Him as your personal Saviour. However, the Bible never tells you to do that! Instead, the Bible expects you to obey the gospel. Do so today by dying to sin through repentance, burying the old person of sin in baptism, so that you can be raised to walk in newness of life.

I love you with the love of the Lord,
